What does this mean, simply put?

Some of the bottles in our auction come from business sellers based in the EU. For legal and tax reasons, we must charge VAT on top of the winning bid price if the buyer is also in the EU.

• Are you buying from outside the EU? No problem – no VAT will be added.
• But if you live in the EU, and you buy a lot marked as “EU + VAT” (like this one), VAT will be added to your invoice.

The exact percentage depends on your country of residence. For example:

• A buyer from Germany will pay German VAT.
• A buyer from France will pay French VAT.
• And so on.

What is excise duty?

Excise duty is a tax that applies to certain goods, including alcohol. It is separate from VAT and is usually calculated based on the amount of alcohol in the product — the higher the alcohol content, the higher the excise.

For whisky, this tax must be paid before the bottle can be legally sold or consumed. Each EU country sets its own excise rates and rules, which is why excise duty often needs to be paid again when a bottle is shipped across borders.
